Volunteer

I started volunteering with Sandy Bear last summer and get so much from it. The families I speak to are so grateful for someone checking in on them and offering support and advice. I have learned loads from working in the office with the practitioners and have developed the confidence to use the skills and knowledge from my previous career and lived experiences.

There are so many different aspects of SB that volunteers can get involved with, there is something for everyone whatever your particular skills or area of interest. I cannot recommend it enough!!

Who Can Volunteer?

We are looking for people who want to make a difference to children and young people. You don’t have to have experience of supporting young people in difficult circumstances, we can help you with that. We just need you to be friendly, approachable and understanding.

If you want to make a real difference to children and young people in your local area, we would love to welcome you into our community.

Sandy Bear is looking for a team of volunteers to help support the Bereavement Practitioners and Family Support Workers at Head Office. The role is varied and has a mixture of telephone/admin-based duties and more practical support.  With coaching, training and mentoring we would love to be able to support more children, young people and families with your assistance.

We are looking for volunteers in the community who can help with raising much needed funds. This could involve attending events and running a raffle, to organising a local pub quiz night, 5k walk or distributing and collecting charity boxes. Sandy Bear has fundraising packs that give you all the information that you need to organise a successful event, or ten.

Sandy Bear sometimes needs extra office support to ensure that activities like making a memory jar or creating a memory box are prepared for the Bereavement Practitioners or packs of books and teddies are sent to children and young people. Occasionally Sandy Bear needs help to prep supplies for training days of teaching staff, especially when there are large amounts of people that need to be trained. The role is based at head office in Milford and is on an ad-hoc basis. Times can be arranged to suit the volunteer.

Sandy Bear is looking for volunteers to help run events in the community. These events often happen in the summer, although November and early December are other popular times. Events volunteers will set up the stand on the day (all Sandy Bear material will be provided) engage with people attending the event telling them about Sandy Bear and what we do. There is often a raffle or other fund raising mechanise to sell to help fund Sandy Bear’s work. The role will involve some standing during the event and sometimes the car park is a distance away from the stand requiring merchandise to be moved by hand.

Sandy Bear is looking for volunteers to help run information stands in schools. These events happen during school term time, often in October or May. School Events Volunteers will set up the stand (all Sandy Bear material will be provided), the event is usually held in the school hall. Parents and staff visit the table, and the volunteers talk to them about Sandy Bear. The role will involve some standing during the event and sometimes the car park is a small distance away from the school requiring merchandise to be moved by small trolley.

The role involves supporting the practitioners when they see children and young people on a one-to-one basis and helping in the support groups run by Sandy Bear. The groups either take place one day a week in 5-week blocks throughout the year or are held over two full days. These are dependent upon local demand and funding available. Family support volunteers assist the service delivery team with activities which can include making a memory jar, a story board, reading age-appropriate books on death, and talking about their special person.

We are looking for people (18+) who enjoy social media. From liking our posts to helping create content for our feed, we have a role for you. You can get involved as much or as little as you like. There will be opportunities to help craft new posts, reels and stories across our social media platforms with our social media person, but if you just want to like and shares our posts that’s OK too. Getting the message of Sandy Bear to the widest audience is what matters. And it can be done any time or place, so it’s a perfect role for people who want to volunteer, but don’t have much time.
